MORAGA, Calif. - Second year head coach Marty Kinsey is pleased to announce the 2011 men's and women's cross country schedule. The Gaels will compete in eight events this fall, five before the season's highlight, the West Coast Conference Championships on October 29.
"When looking into this coming season schedule, we wanted to take a few things into account," said Coach Kinsey. "We wanted to race at invitationals that would expose us to some of the top talent in the country, as well as hit several invitationals where we could see multiple West Coast Conference teams. As this is the second season under the new coaching staff, we wanted to go to the same races as last season to be able to measure our progress from a year ago. Having familiarity of race venues can build confidence and help with how we approach a particular course."
"One great advantage of being a California school in the Bay Area is that we have so many nearby options when creating a schedule," said assistant coach Mark Carberry. "Within an hour or so we can compete against some of the best teams in the NCAA West Region. When developing a program, having these opportunities are paramount to our success."
Saint Mary's begins their season on September 3 when they race at the 19th Annual San Francisco Cross Country Invitational hosted by USF in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, Calif. On September 10 SMC travels to Sacramento, Calif. to participate in the Hornet Jamboree hosted by Sacramento State in Granite Bay Regional Park. Saint Mary's wraps up the month of September traveling to Stanford, Calif. on September 24 to participate in the Stanford Invitational at the Stanford Golf Course.
SMC takes a week off and returns to competition on October 7, returning to San Francisco to participate in the Gator Invitational hosted by San Francisco State. The following weekend the Gaels travel to the South Bay to participate in the Bronco Invitation hosted by Santa Clara at the Baylands Regional Park, that race will serve as a warm up to the WCC Championships. Last season, the women's team set school records in the women's team 5k (18:19) at the Bronco Invitational.
The Gaels wind down their schedule with three races key races, the first being the West Coast Conference Championship on October 29 at the Crystal Springs Course in Belmont, Calif. SMC then travels to Davis, Calif. to participate in the Doc Adams Invitational hosted by UC Davis. Saint Mary's will wrap up their 2011 season on Saturday, November 12 returning to the Stanford Golf Course to race in the NCAA Western Regional.
