MORAGA, Calif. - Saint Mary's cross country assistant coach Mark Carberry has been named associate head coach as announced by head coach Marty Kinsey.
"I am happy to announce the promotion of our new Associate Head Coach, Mark Carberry," said head coach Marty Kinsey. "Mark's contributions for the Gaels have been a major reason why we are seeing the positive change in culture, the improvements in team performances and overall direction of the program. His knowledge, drive for learning in our ever evolving sport, passion for the Gaels and connection with the student-athletes is unparalleled. I am hopeful that this is just the beginning for the support we can reciprocate for Coach Carberry's tireless work ethic."
Carberry is in his second season with the Gaels and has already had a huge impact in taking the program to new heights. He joined the Gaels before the 2010 season and has been responsible for supporting coach Kinsey in managing a newly-defined Division I cross country program, assisting in training plans, workout schedules, travel, and equipment orders. He analyzes individual athlete's stride patters/stride rates/stride lengths as both prehab and rehab techniques, as well as a key recruiter for academically and athletically talented athletes for a growing program.
"Coach Carberry comes from Villanova University, a big time Cross Country program in the Big East," said Kinsey. "He had success there as a student-athlete, went on to complete two master degrees, and is now using his experiences and knowledge gained to make a positive impact for our team."
Carberry came to Moraga after serving as the assistant coach for the men's cross country and track & field teams, while also serving as the co-director of recruiting, for Tufts University from 2008-10.
Before his stint at Tufts he was a member of the Villanova cross country and indoor/outdoor track teams from 2000-04. He was named to the All-Big East Teams in the 4x800m relay in 2003 and 2004, as well as the 1000m in 2004.
