MORAGA, Calif. - Saint Mary's head cross country and track coach Marty Kinsey is pleased to announce the addition of two new student-athletes for the 2012 season. Joining the Gaels in the fall will be Tiffany Monsalud (James Logan HS/ Union City, Calif.) and David Salas (Redlands HS/ Redlands, Calif.).
Tiffany Monsalud joins the Gaels from James Logan High School in Union City, Calif., where she competed under longtime coach Lee Webb for the past two years. Last year was a big year for Monsalud, in only her second cross country season she placed second at the 2011 Mt. SAC D1 Varsity Blue race. She went on to win the MVAL championship, and placed seventh overall at the NCS Championship. The latter effort earned her All-NCS Third Team accolades. She holds personal bests of 11:27.42 (3200m), and 18:29 (3 mile XC).
Coach Kinsey on Tiffany: "Tiffany is the latest commitment to our program and brings with her a high ceiling for improvement. She got a late start to running track and cross country and in her first year focusing on the 3200 was able to run 11:27. Like our entire recruiting class, she brings a very positive and upbeat attitude that will really blend with our team and continue to move our growing culture forward."
David Salas travels up the coast to Moraga from Redlands, Calif. and Redlands High School where he was the 2011 Citrus Belt League cross country champion (15:46 - Yucaipa HS) and led his team to a third place finish. During this past cross country season, Salas placed seventh in the Varsity D1 Blue race at the Mt. SAC Invitational (16:01) as well as second in the Senior Blue race at the Woodbridge Classic (14:56). Salas narrowly missed qualifying for the CIF State Cross Country Championships with his 14th place finish at the CIF-Southern Section Prelims in 15:02 on a 2.91 mile course. In his junior track season, Salas placed third overall for 1600m at the Citrus Belt League finals in 4:28.31. He holds personal bests of 4:24.25 (1600m), 9:56 (3200m), and 14:56 (3 mile XC).
Coach Kinsey on David: "Salas is very excited to join the team and we are thrilled he is coming to Saint Mary's. One thing many may have overlooked with David is that he ran his 4:24 PR when he was just 15 as he skipped the third grade. Thus, his potential is very high and should be a varsity contributor early in his career." Said Kinsey
Monsalud and Salas will join Carina Novell, Taylor Khan, and Katie Alioto making up the class of 2016.
