
WSOC | Gaels Fall In 109th Minute To Tigers

MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's women's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision in double OT to Pacific on Thursday afternoon in Moraga. It was a strong effort by the Gaels as the played a man-down after a red card in the 11th minute of the match.
With the loss, Saint Mary's drops to 5-4-1 while Pacific improves to 2-6. The game winning goal came in the 109th minute on Marciela Padilla's third goal of the match. Just about a minute earlier, the Gaels nearly scored as a cross came close to going in, but a Pacific defender cleared the ball just in front of the goal.
The Gaels had to play a man down because of a Red Card issued early on in the match. The Saint Mary's defender tried to steal the ball with a slide but tripped up the Pacific player for the card.
Saint Mary's took the lead at 1-0 in the 27th minute on a goal by Christina Tognetti, assisted by Katy Roby and Caroline Beaulne.
Pacific would score goals in the 36th minute and the 41st minute to take a 2-1 halftime lead. The 41st minute goal was an own goal but awarded to Pacific's Padilla. On the play, Padilla sent a cross that was deflected by the Saint Mary's defender into the own goal.
The Gaels tied up the match at 2-2 on a header by Vicki Shimkus. Melinda Madden took the corner and Noria Mitchell had a touch pass to Shimkus in the 67th minute.
The teams would remain tied until Padilla scored in the 109th minute for the Pacific win.
The Tigers outshot SMC 27-15 as Khayla Jones recorded 11 saves for the Gaels.
Tognetti led the Gaels with four shots, while Roby and Shimkus took three shots apiece.
Saint Mary's is back in action on Sunday when it hosts Valparaiso at 12:00 p.m. in Saint Mary's Stadium.
