Associate head coach Tom Kloos begins his first year at Saint Mary's in 2013-14, being hired in July of 2013.
Kloos has a strong background in both coaching and competing at the highest levels. He is currently coaching a small group post-collegiate and professional athletes in the Bay Area Track Club. Among the athletes with whom he works are NCAA and USA national champions, national record holders, and Olympians. During the summer leading up to his embarkation at Saint Mary's, Kloos is coaching BATC athletes through the European track circuits, culminating at the IAAF World Track Championships to be held in Moscow next month.
Prior to the BATC, Kloos spent five years at the University of San Francisco as assistant and associate head coach. Kloos coached the Dons to a number of milestones including first WCC team and individual titles, and team and individual NCAA appearances in cross country and track. From 2007-2012 USF raised its profile significantly in the WCC with a streak of women's XC titles, and nearly ended Portland's men's title run in 2010.
Before his time at USF Kloos coached the other "Gaels" of the NCAA, Iona College. In that one year, he helped Iona College achieve their highest finishes at the NCAA championships (Men 3rd, Women 20th).
Prior to Iona, Kloos was the head coach at his alma mater, El Camino High School in San Diego, where he was named coach of the year on four different occasions from 2000-2005. In 2000 and 2003, he was named San Diego Coach of the Year on the girl's side, and in 2004 he received the same award on the boys' side. His top award also came in 2004, when he was named the California Coaches Association Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year. Along with the numerous awards, Kloos coached AJ Acosta to the 2005 Footlocker National Cross Country Championship
Kloos earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Columbia University in 1999 where he was a two-time Cross Country Academic All-American in 1997 and 1998. After a successful undergraduate career at Columbia, Kloos continued his running career at the national and international level. He is a three time USATF competitor in the 3000-meter steeplechase, with a best of 8:30, and was a 2010 USA Track & Field team member for cross country.
