SB | Gaels Tied Atop The WCC

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Saint Mary's softball team rallied to tie the game in the seventh but fell by a 3-2 score in 10 innings at San Diego on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Gaels into a three-way tie for first-place in the West Coast Conference.

Down to their last out, Andrea Hazel hit an RBI double in the seventh inning to tie the game up at 2-2. The teams would stay that way until the 10th inning. Hazel led off the 10th with a double and the Gaels put runners on first and third with one out. The next two Gaels were retired which would turn out to be SMC's best chance to take the lead in extras.

In the bottom of the 10th, the Toreros scored the winning run on an error, as a ball got past the SMC infielder, into the outfield and the winning USD run would come in to score.

Saint Mary's is now 4-2 in WCC play, tied atop the standings with BYU and Pacific. SMC and Pacific square off at Cottrell Field next weekend.

SMC struck first as starting pitcher Sarah Lira homered to left center giving SMC the 1-0 lead in the fourth. USD came back and scored in the bottom half to tie up the game.

The Toreros scored in the fifth to take the lead and held it until the seventh when the Gaels rallied to tie it.
