MORAGA, Calif. – The Saint Mary's women's soccer team outplayed San Francisco in the second half but the Dons came away with a 2-1 victory on Senior Day in Saint Mary's Stadium.
The Gaels had several opportunities and some calls go against them. Saint Mary's had one goal wiped out on an offsides call, and another possible goal taken off when a USF team save off the end line appeared to be borderline of crossing the goal line.
USF is a very good team and posed us with problems today with their athleticism," said head coach Travis Clarke. "They deserve to be on top of the conference standings. They work very hard for each other."
The Dons scored in the seventh minute on a goal by Samantha Jehnings, taking a cross into the box and putting it past Julia McDonald.
San Francisco took a 2-0 lead on Camille Wilson's free kick from the top of the 18 in the 17th minute. The Gaels would go on to out-shoot USF 7-5 in the first half, and the match would end with USF holding an 11-10 edge in shots.
Saint Mary's nearly had a goal just before halftime as a Hannah Diaz corner kick found Anne Whipple who headed the ball past the USF keeper. A Dons field player then headed the ball from the end line to deny the Gaels a score.
The offsides play Clarke refers to happened in the second half. Anyssa Dominguez found a cutting Diaz in the box as Dias chipped it in past the USF keeper. Offsides was called and the Gaels were still not on the board.
Saint Mary's did get on the board in the 74th minute as Samantha Dion scored to pull SMC within 2-1. Mary Fraser had the ball near the end line and sent a cross to Diaz. Diaz then flipped the ball to a cutting Dion who put it home for the Gaels' goal.
Dion, Fraser and Val LaForge had two shots apiece to lead the Gaels. McDonald had one save in 90 minutes of action.
Saint Mary's honored its seven seniors, Khayla Jones, Casi Lynch, Anne Whipple, Caroline Beaulne, Madi Salom, Flannery Davis and Jaime Turrentine in a ceremony before kickoff.
Saint Mary's is back in action next week when it plays at BYU on Saturday.
