MORAGA, Calif. -- The nationally ranked Saint Mary's men's basketball program announced the addition of sharpshooting freshman guard Tommy Kuhse to its talented class of incoming freshmen.
A native of Mesa, Ariz., Kuhse averaged 21 points, 4 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 2 steals per game as a senior to lead Mountain View High School to a section title and the Division 1 state quarterfinals. He earned second team all-Arizona honors for the second straight season and was named the city player of the year.
Under Gary Ernst, the winningest high school coach in Arizona, he set school records for most points in a single game (42), most made 3-point field goals in a game (10) and best career free throw percentage (.890). He also led Mountain View to the Division 1 semifinals as a junior in 2015.
"I'm really happy to have Tommy in our program," said SMC head coach Randy Bennett. "He is a good shooter and has a high basketball IQ. He played for a great coach in a very successful program and he has a very good understanding and passion for the game."
Kuhse joins guards Jordan Ford and Elijah Thomas and center Jock Perry as this year's class of incoming freshmen. The quartet joins an experienced Saint Mary's team that finished last season with a school record 29 wins and earned its third West Coast Conference regular season title in the last six seasons.
All five SMC starters return from last season's championship team, including first team all-league guards Emmett Naar and Joe Rahon. Senior forward Dane Pineau looks to conclude his career among the school's top shot blockers and rebounders, while junior Calvin Hermanson and sophomore Evan Fitzner started every game last season.
This season, Saint Mary's will be looking to retain its place as the winningest NCAA Division I program in the state of California and extend its streak of 9-straight seasons to qualify for postseason competition.
