SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Saint Mary's split the opening day of action at the Gaucho Classic, as the Gaels (9-19) defeated CSU Bakersfield, 7-3, before falling to Seattle in a close battle on Saturday afternoon at Campus Diamond.

Game 1

HOW IT HAPPENED
SMC jumped out of the gates, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Kimiko Zapanta reached on base after an error and secured her 27th stolen base to advance to second base. With runners on the corners, Bailey Lotz singled to center field to bring home Zapanta. The small ball continued as Julia McCormack and Jaymee Campbell each singled to bring in one runs each.

The Gaels claimed the 5-0 lead in the third frame with a two RBI double by McCormack. The Roadrunners would cut the deficit to 5-3 in the bottom of the third, but SMC delivered two more runs in the fourth for the 7-3 victory.

Katlyn Whitt started in the circle for the Gaels and pitched three innings and gave up just three hits with two strikeouts. Eryn McCoy relieved Whitt with four impressive innings, striking out seven batters and not allowing any hits for her second win of the season.

Seattle 3, Saint Mary's 0

HOW IT HAPPENED
Seattle quickly got on the board, scoring single runs in the first and second frames. Trailing 3-0 and in the top of the sixth inning, SMC had a chance to get on the board with a runner on third and one out. Seattle got out of the late jam with a flyout and strikeout and gave up just four hits by SMC.

Freshman Eileen Perez pitched six innings and struck out four while giving just six hits.

  • Zapanta now has a league leading 27 stolen bases. The freshman has reached base safely in 12 consecutive games.
  • McCormack leads the Gaels with 19 RBIs on the season. The freshman leads the team with a .468 slugging percentage.
