LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The Saint Mary's beach volleyball team split its first day of matches in Southern California on Wednesday, sweeping Pac-12 Conference member Oregon, 5-0, before being swept, 5-0, by host and No. 5/5-ranked Long Beach State at the LBSU Sand Courts.

The Gaels' (10-3) pair of Morgan Hughes and Payton Rund had the most successful day, pushing their winning streak to nine in the morning before stretching Long Beach State's (15-1) No. 2 pair to three sets. Hughes and Rund beat the Ducks' (1-4) No. 2 duo of Taylor Agost and Josie Cole, 21-15, 21-8, to start the day.

Their match versus LBSU's Sasha Karelov and Megan Kruidhof was as close as it possible could be, going the full three sets with each set decided by the minimum two points, and the third set needing two extra points to be decided. Hughes and Rund won the first set, 21-19, before dropping the second by the same score. Karelov and Kruidhof were able to edge out the SMC duo in the deciding third set, 17-15.

Emily Bible and Lindsey Knudsen also extended their winning streak to four in the morning before falling to LBSU. They played at No. 1 pairs in both matches, beating Oregon's top pair of August Raskie and Lindsey Vander Weide in three sets, 21-13, 18-21, 15-12.

The Gaels play two more matches on Thursday, heading to Santa Monica to play Concordia (Calif.) and host Loyola Marymount.
