SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 18/RV Saint Mary's beach volleyball team continued to pick up momentum Wednesday as the regular season nears its end, as the Gaels took swept South Bay rival Santa Clara, 5-0, at the SCU Beach Volleyball Courts.

Saint Mary's (14-9) swept four of the five pairs spots, including each of the top three pairs, to shutout the Broncos (1-11). It was the third time the Gaels beat Santa Clara this season and second straight time they swept them. SMC has beaten the Broncos on neutral sand, at home and now on the road.

Morgan Hughes and Payton Rund dispatched of the Broncos' No. 1 pair of Hailey Lindberg and Kirsten Mead, 21-11, 21-16, for their second straight win. Sarah Chase and Mary Hernandez also won their second straight match with a 21-14, 21-16, sweep at the No. 3 pairs spot. Emily Bible and Lindsey Knudsen logged the Gaels' third sweep of the day with a dominating 21-13, 21-7, win over Anna McCreadie and Gretchen Reinert at No. 2 pairs.

Lindsey Calvin and Kelsey Knudsen came from behind at No. 4 pairs to keep the Gaels' sweep in tact. They narrowly fell, 23-21, in extra points in the first set, only to dominate the second set, 21-11, then win the deciding third set, 15-12. Morgan Kendrick and Jennifer "Boo" Laird swept at the No. 5 spot with a close 22-20 win in set one before finishing it off with a 21-14 win in set two over Michelle Gajdka and Erin Reineking.

Saint Mary's hosts No. 11/13 California on Tuesday at Moraga Commons. The match is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Seniors Madi Wilkerson and Hernandez will be recognized in an informal Senior Day ceremony before the match starts.
