SANTA MONICA, Calif. — The Saint Mary's beach volleyball team swept through the first day of the West Coast Conference Championship tournament on Friday, beating No. 6 seed Portland and No. 17/15-ranked and second-seeded Loyola Marymount at Ocean Park Beach.
The Gaels (16-10) started the day with a perfect 5-0 sweep of Portland. Every single SMC pair did not drop a single set against the Pilots (3-8). Madi Wilkerson and Sienna Young had the largest margin of victory against the Pilots, beating Liz Reich and McKenzie Schwan, 21-5 and 21-9, at No. 5 pairs. Lindsey Calvin and Kelsey Knudsen also held their opponents to under 10 points in a set, beating Lauren Naatz and Kassidy Naone, 21-9, 21-13, at the No. 4 pairs spot.
SMC carried its momentum into its second match of the day, edging Loyola Marymount for the first time this season. Hernandez and Chase took their match to three sets in the deciding battle at No. 3 pairs. After falling in the second set, the duo pulled away with the win in the third to seal the Gaels' victory, 21-17, 21-23 and 15-11, with an ace from Chase sealing the match. Morgan Hughes and Payton Rund (No. 1 pairs) topped the Lions' leading pair of McKayla Ferris and Savannah Slattery, 21-17 and 21-13. Calvin and Knudsen also won their second match of the day, sweeping Bozena Culo and Maddie Leiphardt, 21-10 and 21-17, at No. 4 pairs.
Saint Mary's will take on No. 2/2 and top-seeded Pepperdine at 9 a.m. Saturday. If the Gaels beat the Waves they will play for the championship at Noon, but if they fall, they will play at 1:30 p.m.
