MORAGA, Calif. – Saint Mary's men's basketball announced the 2018-19 schedule today, including 31 games, 17 home contests, and match-ups against 12 postseason teams from a year ago.
The Gaels open the season with two home games to start, beginning Wednesday, Nov. 7 against McNeese State, in the recently renovated McKeon Pavilion. Following the home opener, Saint Mary's will face Utah Valley on Sunday, Nov. 11 at McKeon Pavilion.
A road trip to NCAA Tournament participant and WAC Champion New Mexico State gives the Gaels an early road challenge on Nov. 14, prior to heading to Las Vegas for the MGM Resorts Classic. Saint Mary's opens the classic on Nov. 19 against Utah State at the T-Mobile Arena and will then play either Arizona State or Mississippi State, who both played in the postseason a year ago, on Nov. 21.
The Gaels return home for a four-game homestand beginning Nov. 24 against Harvard, who played in the NIT last year. Following a mid-week game against UC Irvine, the Gaels then host Cal on Dec. 1, for the first time in 30 years at McKeon Pavilion. The homestand concludes with a mid-week game against Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 4.
Saint Mary's will then make a quick trip to Los Angeles to participate in the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic at the Staples Center on Dec. 7. The Gaels will face New Mexico in the classic, which features two other games that day in a basketball tripleheader for fans.
Following a home game against NCAA Tournament participant and Big West champion Cal State Fullerton on Dec. 10, the Gaels will then head back to Las Vegas to participate in the MGM Grand Showcase against LSU on Dec. 15 at the T-Mobile Arena. LSU played in the NIT last year and is a preseason Top-25 team in most publications.
A tough stretch of December games continues at home for the Gaels as they host Bucknell on Dec. 19, who played in the NCAA Tournament and won the Patriot League last season. Saint Mary's then travels to Western Kentucky to take on the Hilltoppers on Dec. 22, a team that made it to the semifinals of the NIT last year.
After the holiday break, the Gaels face San Jose State at home on Dec. 29 to end their non-conference schedule as they prepare for West Coast Conference play.
"We are excited to kick off the season at home as we prepare for a challenging non-conference schedule," Head Coach Randy Bennett said. "We have several postseason teams from a year ago coming to McKeon Pavilion and we are looking forward to facing that tough competition. Our games away from home will also be a strong test for our team and will get us ready for another competitive year in the West Coast Conference."
The West Coast Conference schedule kicks off on Thursday, Jan. 3 at San Francisco. The WCC schedule has a slight change this year and will only feature 16 conference games. Saint Mary's will play eight games at home and eight games on the road. The Gaels end conference play with a home game on Saturday, March 2 against Gonzaga.
The WCC Tournament returns to the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas for the 11th time, with the first round games scheduled for Friday, March 8.
