SB | Selden, Roman-Johnston Join Gaels' Staff

Saint Mary's added two more members to their 2020 coaching staff this week with the addition of Jelly Selden and Lizette Roman-Johnston.

MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary's softball team has made two more additions to their coaching staff during the fall by introducing Jelly Selden and Lizette Roman-Johnston to the team. Selden will serve as an assistant coach while Roman-Johnston will act as the team's graduate manager.

Selden is a graduate of UCLA and most recently served as the pitching coach last season at Cal. She played for three years in Italy in the country's highest level of competition and led her team to the championship in each season.

During her time at UCLA, Selden won 110 games, second on the Bruins' all-time wins list, with a 1.35 earned run average and is first in career strikeouts (1,441). Selden also ranks second at UCLA in appearances (167), second in complete games (127) and innings pitched (1012.1), tied for eighth in saves (5) and eighth in shutouts (44).

Selden led the Bruin pitching staff in wins, strikeouts and innings pitched every season. She set a single-season record for strikeouts in her freshman campaign of 2005 with 485 and followed that up with 408 as a sophomore, which ranks second on the list. Selden tossed two no-hitters, both in 2005, as well as 21 one-hitters.

She has served as an assistant coach at Monte Vista High School in Danville and for Batbusters 14U team in Concord. Selden also served as a pitching coach and camp instructor in Italy.

Roman-Johnston graduated from Div. III Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs New York where she starred on the softball team. She was the leadoff hitter for her team while also playing first base and batted .415 en route to First Team All-Region honors as a senior. Post graduation, Roman-Johnston has served as a youth hitting instructor and travel ball coach. She is currently earning her MFA in creative nonfiction writing at Saint Mary's.
