SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Jordan Ford scored 24 points while Tanner Krebs added 14 more as the Gaels outlasted Fresno State 68-58 at the Golden1 Center Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Ford was 8-for-15 from the field during the game and 6-of-7 at the charity stripe. He scored 15 points in the first half and played all 40 minutes in the win. On the other hand, Krebs tallied all but two of his points in the final half and also led the team with six boards.
Malik Fitts scored 13, his fourth game with double-digit points this season, and grabbed five rebounds. Tommy Kuhse had nine points and six assists in his first start of the year. The redshirt junior has had at least six assists in the team's past three games.
Saint Mary's took a 33-27 lead into the halftime break. SMC's lead was at four with 15 seconds to play but after a Bulldog missed two free throws, freshman Kyle Bowen hit a floater on the other end as the buzzer expired to put the Gaels back up by two possessions. Both teams shot well in the first half with Saint Mary's landing 54 percent of their attempts and Fresno State making 50.
Saint Mary's got off on a 9-0 run early in the second half to move ahead by 12. Ford picked up a loose ball to drain a three and then the Gaels created picked up two steals on the next two possessions which led to fastbreak dunks by Krebs and Fitts.
The Gaels countered every Fresno State attack for the remainder of the second half and never led by fewer than three possessions for the final eight minutes of the ball game. The Bulldogs couldn't built a run bigger than six points in the second half.
Jarred Hyder led the Bulldogs with 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting. He was a perfect 6-for-6 in the first half and was the only Fresno State player to reach double figures.
