SB | Pitching Paves Way for Sweep Over Broncos

Saint Mary's swept Saturday's doubleheader as both Gael pitchers threw complete games.

MORAGA, Calif. — On the back of solid pitching, Saint Mary's (9-27, 2-0 WCC) swept the visiting Broncos (8-28, 0-2 WCC) in Saturday's doubleheader to kick off conference play on a high note.

Game 1
Saint Mary's 6, Santa Clara 2

Eryn McCoy got the start in the circle for the Gaels and went the distance with a complete game win to move to 4-5. The junior needed only 83 pitches to shut down the Broncos' offense as she scattered four hits and allowed just two earned runs. Santa Clara especially had trouble early on as McCoy retired eight of the first nine batters she faced.

Saint Mary's biggest inning came in the second when Nikki Alexander put the Gaels up 2-0 with a rocket off the bat that resulted in an RBI triple. Dylan Linton immediately followed with a triple of her own that skipped over the first base bag and would later come around to score on a sacrifice fly courtesy of Jayda Alaan.

SMC added two more insurance runs in the fourth as Alaan drew her 12th hit by pitch of the year to drive in a run and Hannah Chew followed suit with another sacrifice fly.

The Gaels totalled five hits, two walks, and struck out only once in the ballgame.

Game 2
Saint Mary's 3, Santa Clara 0

In the second half of the doubleheader, pitching once again propelled the Gaels to victory as freshman Sofia Earle had one of the team's best performances all season.

Earle tossed the Gaels' first complete game shutout of 2019 and struck out a career-high seven batters. The Broncos mustered up only four hits and the Gaels' pitcher faced only five more batters than the minimum for her third win.

Jaymee Campbell's run that came on a wild pitch was all the offense would need as Earle held SCU scoreless but Saint Mary's added a couple more insurance runs for good measure. After Campbell came home, Kimiko Zapanta poked a single over the second baseman's head to drive in Abbey Mariani. Julia McCormack plated the final run of the game in the third with a fielder's choice.

Zapanta went 2-for-3 from the nine spot to lead the offense while Alexander reached base twice on a pair of walks.
