BVB | Gaels Pick Up Two Wins and a Loss at WCC Championship

SANTA MONICA, Calif. – During a full day of volleyball at the West Coast Conference Championships, the Gaels completed sweeps of both Portland and Santa Clara, but lost the middle match against Loyola Marymount.

In the first match of the day, all five Gael pairings defeated their opponents in straight sets. Sophomore Jennifer "Boo" Laird and freshman Chandler Cowell dominated and outscored their opponent 42-20 in the 4-spot. Seniors Lindsey Knudsen and Sarah Chase held the Pilot duo to just nine points in the first set.

In match two on Friday, SMC fought hard with three of the five pairs taking their matches to three sets, but ultimately the Lions won 4-1. Knudsen and Chase were the lone win in the second match as they beat their opponent by six and two points respectively. Seniors Lindsey Calvin and Emily Bible, juniors Alexsa "Crash" Parker and Sienna Young, as well as sophomore Morgan Kendrick and freshman Selbie Christensen all went to a third set, but none were able to take the wins.

Saint Mary's ended on a high-note however and finished the day with a sweep of Portland. Knudsen and Chase held their Bronco opponent to just five points in each set and were the only SMC pair to have a win in every match on Friday. Seniors Calvin and Bible also had a strong performance as their opponents were only able to collect 23 points total.

COMING UP
The Gaels will continue on in the WCC Championship on Sunday beginning with a match against USF. If SMC wins, they will play the loser of the match between LMU and Pepperdine. If SMC wins that match, they would then play the winner of the match between LMU and Pepperdine. If SMC wins both, they will play in a fourth match which will decide the champion. Since it is a double-elimination tournament, if SMC loses any of the matches their tournament will be done.
