Capital Cross Challenge Final Results
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Youth continues to fuel Saint Mary's cross country as the Gaels' freshmen and sophomores led the women to seventh and the men to 24th at the Capital Cross Challenge.
Women: The women's side place seventh out of 40, recording multiple milestones while finishing among multiple regionally ranked teams. The Gaels finished ahead of Nevada who is currently 15th in the Mountain West and also finished ahead of Loyola Marymount for the first time in approximately 20 years. Sophomore Kaela Dishion placed 31st with a time of 21:25.6 which now ranks 4th best in program history, just ahead of freshman Rayna Stanziano (32nd, 5th best in Gaels' history) who finished with the same time. Junior Abigayle Mitchell (21:38.9, 9th best all-time for SMC) and freshman Briseida Garcia-Meza (21:40.2, 10th best in program) were not far behind, placing 54th and 56th respectively while freshman Lauren Kearney came in 90th (22:01.4).
Men: The men's team placed 24th out of 35 on Saturday at the Capital Cross Challenge. Freshman Lucas Chung was the Gaels' top finisher, placing 61st with a time of 25:01.6 while sophomore Anthony Vazquez was nine seconds behind in 76th (25:10.7).
QUOTABLE
"For the women, this was a huge step forward for the program," said head coach Marty Kinsey. "We beat several teams that we haven't in a long time and there is still room to improve... no Saint Mary's team has ever run this fast on this course before and it is pretty exciting considering we have four underclassmen in our top five. Lucas and Anthony did a very good job moving up today on the men's side, setting lifetime best and leading the Gaels. We just have to clean some things up team-wise at Bronco to run what we are capable of. Lastly, Nolan Dozier ran a very good race in the open section unattached and our open women also did a tremendous job running lifetime bests following in the footsteps of the women in the invite section."
UP NEXT
Saint Mary's will next compete at the Bronco Invite in Santa Clara on October 19, their final tuneup before the WCC Championship.
