SAN JOSE, Calif. — Saturday marked the beginning of the track and field season for Saint Mary's College, and the Gaels sent a contingent of runners to Bellarmine High School for the West Coast Invitational, hosted by Santa Clara University. Those who competed for the Gaels were able to record fast times on the track, both individually and in relays.
Notably, the Gaels were able to pick up a victory in the women's 4x400 meter relay, a team that featured Emma McCarthy, Briseida Garcia-Meza, Lauryn Nazareno, and Abigayle Mitchell. Those four ladies finished the run in 4:09.06, besting the other pairs from Santa Clara by at least eight seconds each.
Among the sectional winners for Saint Mary's, Derek D'Amelia won section two of the men's 1500-meter run, beating a trio of his teammates at the top of the leaderboard. D'Amelia finished the 1500 meters in 4:06.04, just over one second better than teammate Moses Bojorquez (4:07.13). Xavier Gonzalez and Brady Lance were the others to finish at the top of the heat, with all four finishing in the top-11 overall.
A few Gaels were able to make some noise in the women's 1500-meter race, with Rayna Stanziano nearly able to take first, falling less than three seconds out of first with her time of 4:43.19. Her second-place finish was bested only by Janie Nabholz of Santa Clara, with a time of 4:40.72. Mitchell finished third overall in the run, seven seconds behind Stanziano.
"The Gaels had numerous personal bests, a couple of heat wins and season opener bests," associate head coach Harlan Lopez said following the first meet of the season. "It was a great way to start our season."
