BERKELEY, Calif. — The Gaels traveled to Golden Bear territory this weekend as they competed in the Cal Opener and turned in a number of impressive performances, including a first place finish for Rayna Stanziano.
In the women's 1500, the Gaels made a strong statement as they had four runners in the top-20 and two runners in the top-five. Stanziano claimed the top spot as she earned first place in just her second race of the season with a time of 4:33.11, which set a new Saint Mary's program record. Abigayle Mitchell came in fifth place shortly after with 4:37.08 race time which is a ten-second PR and a 13-second improvement from her finish in the last meet.
Emma McCarthy also had a strong day as she placed third in the women's 800 (2:18.90), just two seconds behind the second-place finisher and only five seconds behind the fastest recorded time. McCarthy opened seven-seconds faster than she did last year when competing in the 800. Lauryn Nazareno and Emily Quinby also came in within one second of each other and were able to claim 10th and 11th place in the race.
The men were able to claim fifth place in two separate races for the best finishes of the day from male SMC athletes. Nolan Dozier ran a 3:57.39 in the men's 1500 which earned him fifth place, while Anthony Vazquez was close behind in ninth place with a time of 4:00.51. In the men's 3000, Moses Bojorquez nabbed fifth place with a race time of 8:37.05, which was a five-second PR for him.
"The Gaels ran well today," said head coach Marty Kinsey. "We had some great performances as well as solid openers. I was impressed by everyone's effort and I'm looking forward to building from here."
