MORAGA, Calif. — Redshirt junior Tommy Kuhse has been named to the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association (DI-AAA ADA) 18th Annual Scholar-Athlete Team presented by ARMS Software.
Basketball players from all Division I-AAA ADA member institutions are eligible for these prestigious awards. Each of the nominees is required to maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletics credentials. Nominees must have participated in at least 50 percent (50%) of the team's games listed on the nomination form.
The Gaels' guard posted a 4.00 GPA while pursuing his master's degree in kinesiology while also being a major contributor to the team's success this season. The walk-on led Saint Mary's with 124 assists while averaging 26.5 minutes across 33 games. His best performance of the year came against Long Beach State when he scored 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting and also dished out eight assists. Kuhse matched that single-game assist figure on two other occasions during the season.
"On behalf of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association, I would like to sincerely congratulate all of the recipients for recognition on both scholar-athlete teams for 2019-20, as well as, the Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards and those who have earned a postgraduate scholarship," Division I-AAA ADA President and Vice President for Athletics at the University of Portland Scott Leykam said. "These outstanding student-athletes are leaders in the classroom, in competition and in their communities. We are proud to present them with the highest student-athlete recognition that our association awards."
Of the 11 student-athletes named to the men's team, four came from the West Coast Conference. Alongside Kuhse, Gonzaga's Corey Kispert and San Francisco's Jimbo Lull and Jordan Ratinho were honored.
A special Review Committee of Division I-AAA Athletics Directors were responsible for selecting the winners. The 2020 Review Committee consisted of: Chris Reynolds (Committee Chair), Bradley University; Chasse Conque, UTRGV; Irma Garcia, St. Francis College Brooklyn; Phil Hutcheson, Lipscomb University; Robert Lineburg, Radford University; Joan McDermott, University of San Francisco; Jean Lenti Ponsetto, DePaul University; Marianne Reilly, Manhattan College; and Kenneth Siegfried, Cal State Bakersfield.
