MORAGA, Calif. — With the campus of Saint Mary's College currently unable to host events, Wednesday would have been the 2020 President's Scholar-Athlete Luncheon. In what would have been the third-annual installment of the popular event, 98 student-athletes were honored for their academic success, a number that has increased every year since its inception. While the community cannot gather to formally celebrate, the recognition of the success of Saint Mary's student-athletes and their professors marks a special occasion. 
 
These 98 student-athletes came from all 16 varsity sports on campus. The luncheon is traditionally open to Gaels who carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher as a current sophomore, junior or senior. Each student-athlete is encouraged to invite a professor to attend the luncheon with them as recognition for the role they have played in their academic pursuits.
 
"This event has grown into such a special tradition as we honor the work of our student-athletes," Vice President for Athletics Mike Matoso mentioned. "These Gaels represent Saint Mary's College at the highest level, both on and off the field, so putting aside some time to give them recognition of the behind-the-scenes work is a fantastic occasion."
 
Leading the way in terms of representation of student-athletes was Rowing, with 14 student-athletes on the list including Mary Elise Conzelmann, who carries a 3.95 GPA as a graduate student majoring in management. Close behind was the Women's Soccer squad with 13 student-athletes, led by Sarah Sawatzky and her 3.95 grade point average in psychology. On the men's side, Men's Soccer led all male sports with 11 student-athletes, while Baseball joined the double-digit group with ten.
