COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Men's and women's beach volleyball players from around the country have been selected by USA Volleyball to comprise the 2020 Beach Collegiate National Teams. Saint Mary's is represented on the twenty-nine-player women's roster with Jasmin Suarez, who earns a spot on the national time to follow in the footsteps of Gaels before her who have continued their seasons while competing in events hosted by USA Volleyball. Training plans for this year's team is currently on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Suarez completed her first season of competition for the Gaels after redshirting during the 2019 campaign. She went 4-4 on the abbreviated regular season with her partner Sienna Young, appearing as the Gaels first, third, and fourth pairing. Among notable wins during the 2020 season, Suarez and Young were able to defeat the fourth pairing from then-No. 5 Hawaii on February 29, the only Gaels pairing to defeat the Rainbow Warriors this season.
Suarez was nominated to the team by head coach Gary Hodge and selected from a pool of players based on her collegiate ranking. She earns recognition from USA Volleyball after the Gaels sent Lindsey Calvin and Lindsey Knudsen to the USA Beach Championships last May. In years past, the Gaels have been regulars at the Championships, with pairings being sent every season.
Suarez is the only West Coast Conference athlete to earn a spot on the 2020 Beach Collegiate National Team. Six individuals who the Gaels faced off against in 2020 were also invited to the National Team, including two from No. 7 Grand Canyon University and four from No. 9 Cal. LSU and their top-ranked beach program lead the way with seven athletes on the National Team. This year's squad will be coached by 1996 Olympian Barbra Fontana, and she will be assisted by Hector Gutierrez of TCU and Russell Brock of LSU.
Original plans for this year's 2020 Beach Collegiate National Team were slated to begin in mid-June in Manhattan Beach, running from June 15-20.
