MBB | Johnson Guides Gaels Through Waves, 66-61

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's fended off a pesky Pepperdine (10-10, 6-5 WCC) squad to get back in the win column with a 66-61 victory inside UCU Pavilion on Monday afternoon. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gaels (12-7, 3-5 WCC) had three players reach double figure points in the contest and were led by Logan Johnson with 19. The junior was 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, had a team-best five assists, and also co-led with seven rebounds. 

Johnson had a few key buckets late to help cement the win for Saint Mary's. With 3:35 remaining in the game, he knocked down a triple to put SMC up by seven for their biggest lead of the game. After a 5-0 run by the Waves, Johnson cut through the lane and scored a layup off glass to expand his team's lead back to four. 

Dan Fotu was second on the team with 14 points and also had seven rebounds. Matthias Tass scored 11 and was 4-of-6 from the field before fouling out. 

Saint Mary's longest run of the game came in the second half after Pepperdine took a four-point lead. Four different Gaels combined for a 10-0 series across two minutes and change to put SMC back up by six. 

Only four Waves scored in the game and were led by Cedric Altman who had 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting. 

After a sluggish offensive start to the game, Saint Mary's was sharp in the second half and shot 48 percent overall as a team. The Gaels were also 13-of-15 from the free throw line in the game and made eight of their 10 tries at the stripe in the final half. 

SMC took a two-point lead into the halftime break, 28-26.
