MBB | Saint Mary's Falls to No. 1 Zags in WCC Semis

LAS VEGAS — Saint Mary's battled hard but couldn't pull off their second upset of No. 1 Gonzaga in the past three seasons as they fell in the semifinals of the West Coast Conference tournament, 78-55.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Logan Johnson led the Gaels with 15 points and also contributed four rebounds. The junior posted the team's highest point total for the second straight contest after putting up 25 two days ago against Loyola Marymount in the quarterfinals.

Tommy Kuhse added 13 more points in addition to three assists. Matthias Tass had eight points as well on 4-of-5 shooting.

The Gaels kept the game within sight for much of the first half but could never find their offensive footing. Saint Mary's shot 36 percent overall and were just 2-of-20 from beyond the arc.

Saint Mary's scored the first bucket of the game on a Tass floater but the Zags then proceeded to go on an 11-0 run to take a lead they would hold for the remainder of the night.

Despite the loss, the Gaels accomplished something few teams have by reaching the semifinals of the tournament for the 17th time in the past 19 seasons under Randy Bennett. Saint Mary's is now 21-9 since the tournament moved to Las Vegas back in 2009.

Drew Timme led Gonzaga with 18 points and was 8-of-11 from the field. All five of the Zags starters reached double-figures and the team scored just five points off their bench.

NUMBERS TO KNOW
8: Eight different Gaels scored in the contest.
13: Saint Mary's defense allowed only 13 assists on 33 buckets by Gonzaga.
14: SMC forced 14 turnovers by the Zags and committed one fewer.
4: The Gaels had four blocks compared to zero for GU.

UP NEXT: POSTSEASON PLAY
Saint Mary's will now wait to see if their name is called by one of the various postseason basketball tournaments. The team is projected to be among the 16-team NIT field according to several college hoops pundits.
