SB | Saint Mary's Finishes Off Broncos In Five

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's (10-19, 1-3 WCC) cruised to their first conference win of the season at Cottrell Field with a dominating 10-0 win over the visiting Santa Clara Broncos (5-15, 2-4 WCC).

The Gaels got their scoring started in the second inning by putting up a 5-spot. After a leadoff double by Hannah Chew, Maddie Gallagher drove in the first run of the day with an RBI single down the right field line. A few batters later, Marissa Montelongo ripped a single up the middle for another run and the following hitter Marissa Nishihara crushed a double over the head of the centerfielder to plate two more. Jayda Alaan would drive in Nishihara in the next at-bat with a single to left to make it 5-0.

A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third off the bat of Kenedi Lopes put SMC up 6-0 and just two runs away from the run-rule.

In the bottom of the fourth, Saint Mary's had two batters reach base via the walk. Indya Smith then shot a ball to right field to score Nishihara and Alex Casas would also be allowed to score after an obstruction was called on the Broncos' third baseman. Julia McCormack added on two more insurance runs for the Gaels with a blast to left field that cleared the fence. It was the senior's fourth long ball of the season.

As good as the Gaels' offense was on Friday, the pitching was equally excellent. Sofia Earle started in the circle and threw a one-hit shutout to pick up her fifth win of the season. The junior struck out six, walked only one, and needed just 59 pitches to complete the shutout.

SMC recorded 10 hits on offense by eight different players. The team posted three doubles, one homer, and three walks and struck out just twice. Smith and McCormack each went 2-for-3 in the contest.

UP NEXT: SATURDAY DOUBLEHEADER
