COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — From June 13-18, some of the top collegiate volleyball players will be training in Anaheim for the 2021 USA Volleyball Women's Collegiate National Team, and one of the instructors comes from Moraga. Announced recently by USA Volleyball, SMC Volleyball head coach Rob Browning has been chosen as one of the assistant coaches to work with head coach Chris McGown of Gold Medal Squared.
Browning has seen no shortage of success in Moraga as the head coach of the Gaels Volleyball program, winning 233 matches over his 16 seasons. The Gaels have made five NCAA Tournament appearances under his leadership, including the most recent trip after the 2018 season. 16 different Gaels have been named First Team All-WCC with Browning as their head coach, and he was named the 2009 WCC Coach of the Year after leading Saint Mary's to their first-ever WCC Championship.
"I am always honored to work with USA Volleyball and the world-class athletes there," said coach Browning. "The collegiate national team is made up of the very best NCAA volleyball players in the country, and I get to work alongside outstanding coaches. These opportunities for me help me grow as a coach and always inspire me in ways that help me be a better coach for our student-athletes at Saint Mary's."
This is not the first assignment outside of Moraga that Browning has been a part of. The six years prior to Browning taking over at Saint Mary's, he was an assistant coach for the USA Men's National Team. He has been to four Olympic Games with the USA men's team: 2000 in Sydney, 2004 in Athens, 2008 in Beijing (where the team won the gold medal), and 2012 in London. He coached the USA Women's National Team at the 2019 Pan Am Cup (gold medal) and 2019 Pan Am Games. Browning also coached the USA Women's Junior National Team to the NORCECA Championship in 2010 and to a 4th place finish at the Junior World Championships in Peru in 2011.
The best collegiate volleyball athletes from around the NCAA will partake in the weeklong training session in Anaheim. Shannon Scully of Pepperdine is the lone WCC student-athlete on the list, standing as one of the four liberos chosen. Among others from the West Coast are Zoe Fleck of UCLA (libero), Marin Grote of Washington (middle blocker), Brooke Nuneviller of Oregon (libero), Mac May of UCLA (outside hitter), Ella May Powell of Washington (setter) and Lauren Sanders of Washington (middle blocker).
