XC | Bell Named WCC All-Academic First Team, 13 Honored

SAN MATEO, Calif. — It may have been an abridged cross country season for Saint Mary's, after the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out fall competition. Nonetheless, the Gaels were able to get in a pair of races and the West Coast Conference has announced their annual All-Academic teams following the shortened spring year. Tommy Bell has picked up first-team honors for the Gaels, while a total of 13 Gaels between the two programs have been honored by the conference.

Tommy Bell scores WCC All-Academic First Team honors for the first time in his career after carrying a 3.75 GPA as a Business Administration major. Bell is one 19 male cross country runners who carried a GPA of 3.75 or better in the WCC, and is the lone Gael this year to make an All-Academic First Team. He joins others such as Conner Mantz of BYU, who was an All-American, and Karl Winter of Pepperdine, who featured a 4.00 GPA. In the lone race that Bell competed in during the spring season, he took home a 15th place finish in the Jessup Invite with an 8k time of 27:42.9

Five other male Gaels found themselves earning Honorable Mention nods from the WCC for their performances in the classroom and on the trails. Sebastian Andersson, Moses Bojorquez, Nolan Dozier, Alex Riggsby, and Anthony Vazquez are the others chosen by the conference for the Honorable Mention list. Riggsby was a First Team member last season, and carries a 3.71 GPA as a Politics major. Dozier has been one of the fastest Gaels for a number of seasons now, as the fifth-year won his first Cross Country race this spring at the Jessup Invite. Dozier is a Kinesiology – Exercise Science major with a 3.56 GPA.

On the women's side, seven Gaels were named Honorable Mention All-Academic, led by the dynamic duo of Rayna Stanziano and Abigayle Mitchell. Both Stanziano and Mitchell carry strong GPAs and have been some of the fastest runners for the Gaels over the last two seasons. Mitchell was this year's Saint Mary's Female McKeon Award winner and owns a 3.96 GPA as a Global Studies major, while Stanziano won the only race she competed in this spring (Jessup Invite) and holds a 3.87 GPA as an English major. Jiana Cortero, Sofia Cuevas Dorador, Alize Hartke, Lauren Kearney, and Emma McCarthy are the five other Gaels recognized by the WCC.
