MSOC | Schacht Named Preseason All-WCC, Gaels Second in Coaches Poll
8/18/2021 10:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
SAN MATEO, Calif. — For the second time in as many seasons, Sebastian Schacht has been named to the Preseason All-WCC team, announced on Wednesday morning by the West Coast Conference. The award comes as the latest feather in the cap of the Gaels outstanding midfielder, who figures to help lead the charge as Saint Mary's looks to reclaim the WCC title. Along with the preseason team, the WCC released its Preseason Coaches Poll, which had the Gaels finishing second beyond only Loyola Marymount.
For Schacht, it marks the second-straight year that he has been named to the Preseason All-WCC team after earning honors in the spring leading up to the 2020 season, which was played during the first few months of 2021. Last year, Schacht was also named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. He followed up the preseason honors by being named First Team All-WCC and Second Team All-Region, both for the second time in his career. He scored three times on penalty kicks for SMC, and recorded one assists for seven points. Defensively, he helped the Gaels post four shutouts and was rarely off the pitch, finishing third on the team in minutes.
Saint Mary's earned 43 points in the Preseason Coaches Poll, also snagging one first place vote. The Gaels were 4-2-1 last spring, finishing second in the conference to Loyola Marymount, snapping a streak of back-to-back WCC titles. No team in the NCAA has been more successful than the Gaels over the last three years, with a cumulative program record of 40-4-3. Simultaneous to that, the Gaels have been regulars in the top-25 in the NCAA and spent the duration of last year in the rankings.
The defending champions of the WCC, the LMU Lions, are ranked first in the WCC Preseason Coaches Poll, and 17th in the country via the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll. They went 5-0-2 last year and clinched the crown in Moraga with a 3-1 win over SMC in the penultimate game of the regular season. They return WCC Offensive Player of the Year, Noel Caliskan, and WCC Goalkeeper of the Year, Jacob Jackson.
