The Saint Mary's Men's Tennis Team got wins from
James Watt and Thibaud Maxant on Saturday afternoon in Berkeley, but the Cal Bears got the overall 5-2 victory in the Gaels dual-match play opener for the season at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Watt's stellar senior season continued as he defeated No. 15 Yuta Kikuchi 6-2, 6-2, and Maxant bested Mikey Wright 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

ABOUT UCLA
No. 25 UCLA holds an all-time record of 4-0 against Saint Mary's. The teams squared off each year from 2012-15 at Los Angeles Tennis Center, with the Bruins capturing the most recent decision by a 7-0 score.

It will be the first dual match of the season for UCLA after having a match with Grand Canyon University postponed. Â The Bruins took part in five tournaments during the fall.
Stefan Leustian racked up a team-best eight singles wins, recording quarterfinal-round finishes at the SoCal Intercollegiate Championships and the ITA Southwest Regional Championships.

Alexander Hoogamartens knocked off a nationally-ranked counterpart, No. 70 Lleyton Cronje of UCF, in his debut, and went on to beat another, No. 117 Daniel De Jonge of Pepperdine, at the ITA Southwest Regionals. He finished the year with a 4-2 singles record.
Giacomo Revelli and
Patrick Zahraj teamed to make the ITA Southwest Regionals doubles final round. Their three wins tops on the team during the fall.

ABOUT CAL POLY
Last season, Cal Poly finished with a 14-8 overall record and ranked No. 72 in the nation. The Mustangs won the Big West regular season title for the first time since 2013 after going undefeated in Big West play for the first time since 2012 in addition to a 7-0 record at home. They also made the Big West Tournament Championship match for the fifth time in the last six tournaments.

Among the players returning from last year's team include three who earned All-Conference honors in sophomore
Noah Berry, who last season was named the Big West Freshman of the Year, redshirt sophomore
Joe Leather who was named Second Team All-Conference in doubles, redshirt junior
Gary Vardanyan who earned Honorable Mention All-Conference honors in doubles, and redshirt sophomore
Fernando Fonseca who led the team in singles wins.
Graduate student
Hendrik Inno comes to the Mustangs after a four-year career at Belmont where he was a two-time Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year as well as the OVC Co-Freshman of the Year in 2017. Redshirt sophomore
Colter Smith spent two years at USC where he redshirted his freshman year with the Trojans before going 6-0 in singles and 5-4 in doubles last season.
Bastiaan Weststrate will be the Mustangs' lone true freshman this year. He comes to San Luis Obispo from the Netherlands where he was a three-time Dutch national singles champion in U12 in U14. He also won six ITF junior doubles titles and reached an ITF junior ranking as high as 317 in the world.
