LAST TIME OUT
Saint Mary's earned their biggest win of the season this past week as the Gaels took down No. 22 San Diego State at the Jerry Colangelo Classic in Phoenix. SMC led by as many as nine points in the second half and held on for a 68-61 victory, their first over the Aztecs since 2009. The Gaels had one of their most complete showings of the season, shooting at over 50% from the field and holding the Aztecs to just 33.3% from the floor in the second half. It capped off a 2-0 week for the Gaels, a week that saw them get back into the receiving votes category of both the AP and Coaches Polls for week six.

AWARDS FOR MAHANEY, DUCAS
Two players picked up significant awards following the Jerry Colangelo Classic.
Alex Ducas was named the Boost Mobile Player of the Game, which was presented by Jerry Colangelo himself on the court following the game. That came after Ducas scored 17 points, including 14 in the first half, to power the Gaels offense.
Aidan Mahaney then was named the WCC's Freshman of the Week for the third time this season, after scoring 33 points across two games. Mahaney has now won the award in back-to-back weeks.

ABOUT NEW MEXICO STATE
In the national spotlight for reasons outside of the court, the Aggies sport a solid team during the 2022-23 season. They are in the middle of a wicked road trip that began at Santa Clara last Wednesday, and then took them to Duquesne (Pittsburgh) over the weekend. They dropped their game to SCU by one point, but beat Duquesne by 13 points on Sunday. Their offense is diverse, with four players averaging over 11.5 points per game and two more averaging at least nine points per game. They shoot it well, at 46.1% over the year, and they have the fifth-best three-point percentage in the country. Deshawndre Washington has been the best player so far, leading the team in scoring, rebounding, and assists.
Â
ABOUT COLORADO STATE
This is not the same Colorado State team that beat Saint Mary's in Fort Collins last year, with players like David Roddy gone from the program. The Rams are still solid enough, with a 7-4 record, but they did take a bad loss at home to Northern Colorado on December 3. Their most recent game was a 115-72 thumping of Peru State from the NAIA, which took place one week ago. They aren't a strong rebounding team, ranking second-worst in the country in offensive rebounding, but they sport a top-70 offense in terms of KenPom efficiency. Part of that is thanks to Isaiah Stevens and his 18 points per game and 61.4% FG in his first four games of the season. As a team, the Rams are shooting 51.1% from the field and 40.1% from beyond the arc.
