MBB | Gaels Ranked No. 23 in AP/Coaches Polls Heading Into Final Week of Season

NEWYORK, N.Y. — Saint Mary's Men's Basketball swept their most recent week of West Coast Conference play at home, taking down conference rivals in USF and BYU both by finals of 69-64. That earned Saint Mary's a return appearance in the both the AP Top-25 and the USA Today Coaches Poll for Week 16, where the Gaels re-enter the rankings in the No. 23 position.
The Gaels returned to their winning ways this week after losing two games the week before, beating a pair of the top teams in the WCC at home. Wins over San Francisco and BYU were enough to get the Gaels back into the rankings for the second time this season, where SMC will look to stay there heading into the WCC Tournament. This is the first time since the 2019-2020 season that the Gaels have been ranked multiple weeks (ranked the first two weeks during the 19-20 season).
According to the metrics, the Gaels are sitting nearly as good as they've been all season. As of this publication, Saint Mary's is No. 21 according to KenPom and the NET Rankings. When the season began, Saint Mary's was No. 42 in KenPom and No. 55 in the NET Rankings.
The final week of the regular season is in front of SMC, with one road game and one home game left before the postseason begins. The Gaels head to San Diego on Thursday night for their final road game of the regular season before coming back home for their biggest game of the season. Saint Mary's hosts No. 1 Gonzaga on Saturday night at 7:00 pm for Senior Night and the final home game of the year. Saint Mary's lost by 16 on the road to Gonzaga two weeks ago.
