DAVIS, Calif. — Saint Mary's Track went up to Davis this weekend for the Aggie Open, and saw continued success that built off of their season-opening performance. With a host of runners running in different events than one week ago, they still saw fast times and a series of personal bests at the Aggie Open, marking two successful meets to begin the 2022 season.
TRIO AT THE TOP
Another week, another race win for Rayna Stanziano as she won the 800m race with a time of 2:09.13, just a second away from an early-season PR. But what comes as a bit of a surprise, in the best way, was a pair of freshmen challenging her for the win. Klara Frih and Malia Gay took second and third in the 800m and weren't too far off the pace of Stanziano, with times of 2:12.60 (Frih) and 2:14.39 (Gay), respectively, in their best runs of the seasons.
Those performances were just a few of the standout races run by the women on Saturday afternoon. Molly Dreher hit a pair of personal bests on the day, recording her best times in the 800m and the 1500m. Hannah Wohlenberg became the fourth Gael this season to run the 3000m in less than 10 minutes when she finished in 9:54.43, good for 11th place overall. In a rare short-distance race, the Gaels sent Maddie Fletcher out in the 200m, and she won her heat, edging out Kaitlyn Gonzales of Chico State with a time of 26.82 (the eighth-fastest mark of the event).
1500 REASONS IT WAS A GOOD DAY
Led by Chandler Maciel in the 1500m, the Gaels were posting some excellent marks on the men's side of the 1500m. Maciel finished third in the first section of the 1500m, finishing with a time of 3:54.28. Maciel was running in the most competitive heat, which saw the fastest times of the day, and his PR of two seconds was good enough to secure third place overall. Sebastian Andersson and Richard McLain were also sharp in the 1500m, as they both put up their fastest marks at the collegiate level in the 1500m. Andersson finished with a 4:04.66, McLain put up a 4:08.19, and Muhammed Ahmed was in the middle with a time of 4:06.53 in his first collegiate 1500m.
The 3000m also saw some pretty good marks from the Gaels, highlighted by an eight-second personal best from Payton Fox. The sophomore finished fourth in his heat with a personal-best time of 8:47.92, beating out his teammate Curtis Volf for the spot. Volf ran an 8:48.05 in his first collegiate crack at the 3000m, finishing the second heat in fifth place. Thomas Osborne also hit a PR in the 3000m with his time of 8:49.59.
KINSEY QUOTES
"This was another really good performance by the Gaels to begin the season. We built off the success we had last week, and put up more PRs and more fast times. With this kind of start to the season, we are excited for what's ahead." – head coach, Marty Kinsey

Saint Mary's will be a bit more local next weekend as they head across to the Peninsula to take part in the Cardinal Classic, hosted by Stanford, on March 19. Saint Mary's will have runners at Stanford in two of the next three weeks, as a select number of Gaels will be back at Stanford on April 1-2 for the Stanford Invitational.
