LAST TIME OUT
The Gaels had their streak snapped on Sunday but still built a rally in the ninth that came up just short in a 9-7 loss to the UC Riverside Highlanders. The first loss of the season puts SMC's record to 11-1 and a set new program record in wins to start a season by five games.
Â
The Gaels were able manufacture runs, but productive outs or wild pitches were how the Gaels would have to scratch across runs throughout the day.
Â
Riverside struck in the seventh with their second extra-base RBI hit of the day when a double to left center cleared the bases and put the Highlanders up 8-5. Another Gaels error added a ninth run to the scoreboard for UC Riverside going into the ninth inning.
Â
But Saint Mary's was not done trying to keep that streak alive. Almanza drove in Napier with a double to center before a double to right by Chong scored Almanza and the Gaels were down three with two down in the ninth.
Â
The Gaels would plate a run with a balk and suddenly SMC was down just 9-7. The Highlanders managed to get
Nick Mistone out for just the second time in a 3 for 5 day on a bang-bang play at first to escape the threat.
Â
Chong drove in two runs on a 1 for 1 day with a walk and a sac fly. Almanza was 2 for 5 with and RBI and two runs scored. Campos scored a pair of runs as did Napier.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
Saint Mary's will allow fans in for free this season to Gaels baseball games as construction on the new stadium seating will take place this season.

ABOUT SAC STATE
Â
The Hornets - led by 12th-year head coach Reggie Christiansen - are coming off another 30-win season, finishing 35-22 and advancing to their fourth straight WAC Conference Tournament. They've gotten off to a good start in 2022, including sweeping traditional powerhouse Long Beach State before losing three straight to Houston Baptist.
Â
The team returns 17 players from a season ago, 16 of which saw game action last season, with five of those 21 returners in their fifth year with the program. Among the team's returners are four players who started 40 or more games in 2021. They include catcher Dawsen Bacho, whose 39 RBIs last year lead all returners, infielder Steven Moretto, the team's leading returning power hitter (8 home runs, 22 doubles), outfielder Trevor Doyle, who hit a career-best .324 and led the team with 52 runs in 2021, and infielder Keith Torres, the only Hornet to start and play in all 57 games a season ago.
Returning on the mound is relief specialist Jack Zalasky, who finished 7-2 with 4 saves and a 2.45 ERA across a team-leading 28 appearances last season. Lefty Brady Rodriguez, who leads all returners with 51.0 innings thrown a year ago, appeared in 21 games, and was both a starter and reliever last year. Right-hander Eli Saul is the team's only true returning starter after starting 13 games in 2021.
