MBB | Logan Johnson to Use Fifth Year, Returning to Saint Mary’s

MORAGA, Calif. — Senior guard Logan Johnson, named to the All-West Coast Conference Second Team during the 2021-22 season, has announced his to return to Saint Mary's for his fifth collegiate season. The Mountain View native has decided to use the extra year of eligibility granted from the NCAA following the COVID-19 pandemic, making him eligible to play during the 2022-23 season.

Johnson was named First Team All-WCC one season ago and backed up his Preseason All-WCC honors by making Second Team as a senior. Johnson won the WCC Player of the Week award twice and ranked third on the Gaels with 11.9 points per game, second in assists with 88, and led the WCC in steals with 67. His 67 steals are the second-most in a single season in Saint Mary's history, and were just one of the ways he improved his game from his junior to senior seasons. Johnson shot 31.8% from three-point range, up over eight percent from the season before, and his 88 assists were more than double the number put up from his junior campaign.

Johnson was a key force in the Gaels run down the stretch to the NCAA Tournament, scoring double-digits in points in 12 of the final 14 games of the season, including a 20-point performance in the Gaels win over Indiana in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Over the course of his Saint Mary's career, Johnson has scored over 700 points and is nearing the top-ten in career steals.

With Johnson scheduled to return to the Gaels next season, Saint Mary's is projected to return four of their five starting players from the NCAA Tournament team. The entire backcourt will return, with Johnson joining Augustas Marciulionis and Alex Ducas. With Kyle Bowen set to return for his senior season, the Gaels are slated to bring back two of the better defensive players in the West Coast Conference to a team that led the WCC in scoring defense at 60.6 points per game.
