MBB | Gaels Returning to Jerry Colangelo Classic in 2022

PHOENIX, Ariz. — For the second year in a row, Saint Mary's Men's Basketball is included in the field for the Jerry Colangelo Classic. This year's version of the event will take place over the span of two separate days, beginning on December 10 and concluding on December 21.
The Gaels will play on both days of the classic, first taking on San Diego State on December 10, and then returning to face Wyoming on December 21. The Jerry Colangelo Classic will return to the Footprint Center, home of the Phoenix Suns, giving the Gaels two opportunities to play in an NBA arena in an 11-day span.
"We are excited about returning to the Jerry Colangelo Classic in 2022," mentioned head coach Randy Bennett. "Neutral-site games at venues like Footprint Center are great experiences for our players, and help prepare us for where we want to be in March. It will be a good test for our team."
The Gaels and Aztecs have met in each of the past two seasons on neutral floors, including last year at the Jerry Colangelo Classic. SMC dropped last year's game by a score of 63-53, and the Gaels lost the year before when the two teams met in San Luis Obispo. Perhaps the third time is the charm for Saint Mary's, looking for their first win against San Diego State since 2009. The Aztecs were a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament last year, falling to Creighton in overtime in the opening round.
The matchup between Saint Mary's and Wyoming will be the first meeting between the two programs since 1956, when Saint Mary's scored a 73-53 road win against the Cowboys. This will be their first matchup against Wyoming on a neutral floor, as all three previous meetings took place in Laramie. Wyoming is coming off their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2002, as they were awarded an at-large bid to play in the First Four, where they eventually lost to Indiana.
Additional matchups in this year's Jerry Colangelo Classic feature Grand Canyon and North Texas (Dec. 10), USC and Colorado State (Dec. 21), and UC Santa Barbara and Appalachian State (Dec. 21).
The Jerry Colangelo Classic is one event in the Hall of Fame's series of collegiate events, which continues to grow in an effort to celebrate the game outside the museum walls. Tickets for the 2022 Jerry Colangelo Classic will go on pre-sale on Monday, July 25 and will be on-sale on Tuesday, July 26.
