Bockler Takes Home First Student-Athlete of the Week Award
8/16/2022 5:02:00 PM | General, Men's Basketball
MORAGA, Calif. — With sports back in action last week, Saint Mary's has awarded its first Bay Alarm Student-Athlete of the Week award of the school year. Taking a starring role while the Gaels were in Australia, junior guard Leemet Bockler of the Men's Basketball team is the first winner of the 2022-23 season.
Bockler played an instrumental role in the Gaels going 6-0 for the first time during a foreign tour. Bockler drew the starting assignment in two of the six games, and was one of the team's leading scorers, putting up a total of 80 points, or 13.3 points per game. He scored at least 10 points in four games, and broke out for a 26-point performance against Sydney United Basketball on game two of the trip.
Bockler was hampered by injuries last season and appeared in just 12 games, playing a total of 48 minutes and scoring 23 points. He was beginning to breakout as a freshman during the 2020-21 season before a foot injury derailed the remainder of the year. A healthy Bockler proved he can be a dangerous shooter for the Gaels moving forward, as proven by his 13 made three-pointers down under.
The Gaels returned home from their trip abroad early on Monday morning and will have a few weeks off before practice returns at the onset of the semester. The Gaels will prepare to open their season at home against Oral Roberts on November 7. SMC begins the 2022-23 year with five-consecutive home games, including three against teams that have made the NCAA Tournament in either of the last two years.
