TRK | Freshmen Steal the Show at Portland Indoor One

PORTLAND, Ore. – It was a fast and furious day in Portland as the Saint Mary's Men's and Women's Track and Field teams competed at the Portland Indoor One Sunday afternoon.
 
A handful of freshmen impressed, as Penelopea Gordon claimed victory in the women's 400m, and Noah Pagaran took the 800m win.
 
TAKE OFF
The women's 200m got the day's action underway as seven Gaels hit the track for the sprint. Freshman Madison Dwyer was the quickest of the bunch, finishing in 7th of 38 runners in a time of 27.72. Hailey Vines took home 17th in a time of 28.88, with Emily Quinby finishing 27th in 30.25 seconds.
Elizabeth Nip was close behind in 31st, crossing the line in a time of 31.75. Natalia Nathan, Emily Field, and Piper Kunesh rounded out the field for the Gaels, finishing in 34th, 36th, and 38th respectively in times of 32.14, 33.22 and 56.08.
 
Penelopea Gordon and Lotte Van Schaik repped SMC in the 400m. Gordon was the best of the bunch, leading the field of 21 runners with a time of 59.82, nearly two seconds faster than the second place. Van Schaik ran well for the Gaels as well, claiming 6th in a time of 1:04.92.
 
ALL THE MILES
The mile was next up, as five women and eight men featured for Saint Mary's. On the women's side, Dani Rowlinson was the fastest of the bunch, finishing 2nd out of 50 runners with a time of 5:08.51. Finishing just outside the top 10 was Jiana Cortero, claiming 12th in a time of 5:26.75.
Her teammate Emily Field was a few spots back in 15th in a time of 5:29.67. Callie Buchanan and Lauren Buckley rounded out the women's mile, as Buchanan finished 27th in a time of 5:42.17 and Buckley in 35th in a time of 5:59.18.
 
On the men's side, Blaine Reynolds led the way, finishing 5th of 74 runners in a time of 4:16.60. Curtis Volf and Payton Fox also finished inside the top ten, as Volf finished 8th in a time of 4:20.66, and Fox right behind him in 9th in a time of 4:20.72.
 
Thomas Osborne snuck into the top 20, claiming 19th in a time of 4:27.37. Jacob Bravo and Aidan Donovan were next to finish for the Gaels, as Bravo was 33rd in a time of 4:36.20, and Donovan in 39th in 4:37.06. Angel Castro and Troy Coulston both finished inside the top 50, with Castro running a 4:40.01 to finish 44th, and Coulston running a 4:41.65 to claim 48th. Bryan Cromartie rounded out the bunch in 60th with a time of 4:50.20.
 
MOVING AND GROOVING
Just four total runners featured in the women's 800m, one of which was SMC's own Molly Dreher. The junior took care of business, winning the event in a time of 2:19.58, two seconds ahead of second place.
 
In the men's 800m, the Gaels brought the heat to the track. Noah Pagaran was the quickest of the lot, winning the event in a time of 1:58.32. His teammate Jason Habash battled the whole way, finishing inches behind Pagaran in a time of 1:58.36.
 
Three more Gaels finished inside the top-10, with Payton Fox in 4th in a time of 2:00.93, Blaine Reynolds closely behind in 5th in a time of 2:01.41, and Thomas Osborne in 8th in 2:02.65.
 
Freshman Eric Martinez was next up for SMC in 14th with a time of 2:06.3. Jacob Bravo followed in 16th in a time of 2:06.37, and Bryan Cromartie in 19th in a time of 2:08.51.
 
Five Gaels rounded out the rest of the field, finishing 21st through 25th. Troy Coulston was 21st in a time of 2:11.24, Aidan Donovan in 22nd in 2:11.38, Angel Castro in 23rd in a time of 2:12.39, Sam Andersen in 24th in 2:14.77, and Raphael Lobo in 25th in a time of 2:15.91.
 
RELAY ROUNDUP
The 4x400m relay wrapped up the action on Sunday afternoon. On the women's side, Hailey Vines, Dani Rowlinson, Molly Dreher, and Penelopea Gordon ran for the Gaels, finishing third out of eight teams in a time of 4:14.87.
 
On the men's side, Jason Habash, Kellen Steplight, Noah Pagaran, and Eric Martinez ran for SMC, claiming 4th out of 11 relays in a time of 3:40.67.

The Saint Mary's Track and Field teams are back in action two weeks from now as they'll return to the Chiles Center for the Portland Indoor Two on Sunday, February 5.
