SAN MATEO, Calif. — On the strength of a strong performance in Saturday's win over Santa Clara,
Aidan Mahaney has been named the West Coast Conference's Freshman of the Week. This marks the seventh time this season that Mahaney has won the award, the most in the conference by a wide margin.
Â
Mahaney turned in another 20-point performance on Saturday night as he helped the Gaels take down Santa Clara for their ninth-straight win overall, and seventh in WCC play. He scored 15 points in the first half, his third 15-point half of the season. He now has six 20-point games, which is the second-most in Saint Mary's history for freshmen (Patty Mills - 8). For the week, Mahaney shot 50% from beyond the arc.
Â
With win number seven for Mahaney, he is close to joining rare company. In the first two years of the award, it was dominated by Gonzaga players. Jalen Suggs won it 10 times as a freshman during the 2020-21 season, and Chet Holmgren won it nine times last year.
Â
This week features just one game for the Gaels, who should be rested and ready to go for their road game against BYU next Saturday. It will be the final trip to Provo in West Coast Conference play for SMC, as the Cougars are set to depart the WCC at the end of the season. The game will tip-off at 7:00 pm PT and will be televised on ESPN2. Saint Mary's has not won at BYU since December 30, 2017.
