MBB | Mikey Lewis Becomes First Player To Win WCC Freshman and Player of the Week in the Same Week Since 2022

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Saint Mary's Men's Basketball has come out of the gates hot! The Gaels are off to a 4-0 start, including a pair of wins over teams that made the NCAA Tournament a year ago, Akron and Nebraska, this past week. A big reason why has been their freshman phenom sixth man, Mikey Lewis. Despite coming off the bench, Lewis has become the Gaels second leading scorer, averaging 16.3 points per contest, and shooting 54% from the field and 52% from three. Those numbers all jumped up mightily this week, after scoring 18 and 23 respectively against Akron and Nebraska, shooting 14-25 from the field and 9-14 from three en route to being named both the WCC Freshman and Player of the Week. He is the first player since Gonzaga's Chet Holmgren (2022) to earn this distinction.

Against Nebraska, Lewis added career-highs in minutes, points, rebounds, assists and steals. He became the first freshman since Matthew Dellavedova to score in double-figures in each of his first four games as a Gael. If he gets to five in a row this week, he will become the first ever freshman Gael to accomplish this feat in the Randy Bennett era.
Lewis and the Gaels have a pair of home contests this week, taking on Stanislaus State on Wednesday and Cal Poly on Saturday.
