MORAGA, Calif. - In the 2024 season, the Saint Mary's men's cross country team made history with their best finish at the NCAA West Regionals meet as they finished 14th out of 31 teams, tied their best finish since 1999 placing 5th at the West Coast Conference Championships, and finished second at the USF Invite for the first time in over eight years. Graduate Student Zane Jackson was the leading Gael in his first year with the squad, pacing the Gaels in four of five meets.
Jackson started off the season competing at the USF Invite with a time of 24:46.1. Throughout the season, he stayed consistent as he only ranged between one to three seconds at each meet besides the Bill Dellinger Meet in Oregon, where he earned his personal best time of 24:11.0. The Charleston, South Carolina native continued to show a steady climb as he placed 27th at the West Coast Conference Championships and 54th earning a PR for the 10K at the West Regional.
Curtis Volf and Eric Martinez joined Jackson as the most consistent finishers for the Gaels, as they both scored for the team in four of five races they competed in. Volf took off mid-season as he was part of the Gaels top three finishers in the West Coast Conference Championships with a time of 25:12.0 good for 38th and placed 94th in his third NCAA West Regional meet. Martinez started off the year strong by earning his personal best time at the USF Invite while placing 15th with a time of 24:54.4. He continued to be a key runner for the Gaels as he was only one spot off of scoring at the Bill Dellinger Invite. Martinez wrapped up his season in 43rd at the WCC Championship and 103rd at the West Regionals.
Other essential members of the team included Felix Francisco Jr., Jacob Moffett and Jason Habash who all competed in all five races. Francisco and Moffett earned their best times at the Bill Dellinger Invite and scored for the Gaels in three races, while Habash ran his best time at the WCC Championship placing 88th and scored in the final two meets of the year. The Gaels should have a good core returning for next season, as Martinez, Moffett and Habash will all have eligibility.
