OFF TO THE RACES
This past weekend, the Gaels swiped an astonishing 20-22 bases over a four game stretch, including a program record eight in their 8-1 victory over Montana. The speedy weekend pushed the Gaels to 41 stolen bases on the season, good four seventh in the country.
Marissa Montelongo leads the way with a perfect 12-12 stolen bags, while
Hannah Ferguson has taken 8-10.
DOING A JOB
Hannah Ferguson was a coach's dream in the leadoff role this past weekend. The sophomore from San Diego racked up eight hits in 14 ABs over the four game weekend, scoring four times and driving in two. Ferguson had the game winning hit in the seventh against Bakersfield in the Gaels narrow 1-0 victory over the host Roadrunners. Ferguson is now in the midst of a six gam hit streak, and will look to extend it even further this weekend.
ABOUT THE SEAHAWKS
The Gaels will square off with Wagner for the first time in program history. The Seahawks are off to a 2-2 start under the first year direction of Head Coach Glen Moore. Moore previously held the head coaching role at Division III Brooklyn College, where he was a finalist for the CUNYAC Coach of the Year award in 2023. The team began their season at the Hampton Invitational, defeating Norfolk State twice before falling to Hampton and Coppin State. Averaging nearly five runs per contest in the early goings, this team has shown offensive promise, with a "big three" in their lineup. Senior Samantha Tran has come out of the gate hot, going 6-14 with two runs scored and two RBI through her first four games. Freshman Sydnie Trujillo has earned her way into Coach Moore's starting lineup going 3-8 in her first three collegiate games, while sophomore Payton Janicki is another young player that Seahawks fans can get excited about with a team-high four RBI in her first four games of the year. The Seahawks have used four different pitchers on the young season. Freshman Abby Moran looks like she'll be the workhorse of the staff, already with 11.2 innings under her belt. This will be the first meeting between the two schools, but a familiar face will be returning to Cottrell Field, as former Gael standout Jayda Alaan serves as an Assistant Coach for the Seahawks.
