SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — For the second time this season, a pair of Gaels Softball players swept the WCC Weekly Awards, as freshman infielder
Sam Buckley earned WCC Player of the Week, while freshman pitcher
Mia Nishikawa earned WCC Pitcher of the Week. The Gaels also swept the weekly awards on February 12, when Nishikawa and
Tori Cervantes won Pitcher and Player of the Week respectively. The award was the second for both Buckley and Nishikawa.
Nishikawa picked up three of the Gaels five wins in the circle this week. She tossed two complete games against Iowa and North Dakota State, shutting out the latter in her third complete game shutout effort. Against Marist, Nishikawa entered in relief and pitched the Gaels through 4.1 innings, including an extra frame before they walked off the Red Foxes 12-11. She continues to lead the Gaels with a 1.87 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, seven wins, seven complete games and 67.1 innings pitched
Buckley offensively led the Gaels to a 5-0 week, with seven hits including three of the extra base variety and four runs driven in. After this week, Buckley put her average at a conference best .422 and brought her RBI total to an impressive tally of 20. Her three hits against Marist was her first career three hit ballgame. She reached base in every game this week.Â
The Gaels will take on the Hornets of Sacramento State in the capital tomorrow before returning home to take on Idaho State on Thursday.Â
