MXC | Gaels Return to Golden Gate Park to Open Season at USF Invitational

MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's men's cross country team will compete in the USF Invite to begin the 2024 season.
In the 2023 West Coast Conference meet, the men finished seventh overall. Cayden Hein was the Gaels top finisher as he took 22nd place with a time of 25:43.0. Throughout the race, Hein jumped 22 spots. Junior Blaine Reynold, finished 32nd with a time of 26:13.6 with Luke Bland just three spots behind him in 35th, jumping 18 spots from beginning to end.
All three men will be returning for this upcoming season, along with Aidan Donovan, Jacob Moffett, Eric Martinez, and Luther Hart who were impactful members of the cross country team a year ago. The program is welcoming an additional eight new runners for this upcoming season.
ABOUT THIS RACE
When the Gaels competed in this Invite last season, they opened up the first 2K with 12 runners occupying spots 102-113. At the 4K mark, Aidan Donovan led the Gaels in 84th place, followed by Jacob Moffett in 85th, Angel Castro in 87th, and Eric Martinez in 88th. 2 kilometers later at the 6K split, Martinez jumped into 65th place moving up 23 spots from the last split, followed by Donovan just two spots behind, and Luther Hart finishing rounding out the top three in 72nd with the final 2K left. Martinez continued to close strong, taking 56th overall with a time of 25:40.4 to pace the Gaels. Donovan also continued to climb, finishing in 59th, just 5.3 seconds behind Martinez. Troy Coulston (66th), Luther Hart (68th) and Alexandro Alvarez (69th) rounded out the top five finishers for the Gaels a year ago at this event.
The course at Golden Gate Park is a mostly flat 2000m loop composed of grass and dirt with a gradual descent from the start to the 600m mark and a gradual uphill elevation change from 1200m mark to the 1800m mark.
