BOSTON — As just announced by College Insider, the Gaels own Paulius Murauskas has been named the Lute Olson National Player of the Week. Murauskas led the Gaels to a pair of wins against top tier conference foes, San Francisco and Washington State, the former by 20 points at home, and the latter in come from behind fashion on the road.
After being limited to just 8.8 PPG through his first six WCC contests, Paulius Murauskas had an offensive explosion of a week, helping the Gaels to two more big victories over USF and Washington State (on the road). The big man dropped 24 against the Dons, scoring 16 of his 24 in the paint, then followed it up with 25 in Beasley Coliseum against the Cougs, with a steady diet of interior scoring and perimeter shooting. Murauskas also ripped down 12 boards against the Cougs for his ninth career double-double. This is the first time that Murauskas has scored 20+ in back to back games in his career.
The last Gael to earn a National Player of the Week honoree was Mitchell Saxen a season ago, when he was named the Oscar Roberton National Players of the Week, presented by the USBWA, after scoring 24 points and 16 rebounds, including the game winning layup in double-overtime vs UNLV.
Murauskas will look to lead the Gaels to another pair of big victories this week at Santa Clara (1/29) and hosting Gonzaga (2/1).
