Mikey Lewis, scoring 26 points over the two games, logging back-to-back double digit scoring outings for the first time since the open of the season when he did it in each of his first four collegiate games. As such, Lewis has been named Week Nine's WCC Freshman of the Week, his second time earning this honor. This is the first time that Saint Mary's has had two different player each win Freshman of the Week honors on multiple occasions since the inception of the award by the WCC in the 2020-21 season, as Lewis joins teammate
Andrew McKeever as a two time winner this season.
Mikey Lewis began his collegiate career with four straight double-digit scoring outputs, but was limited to just one over his next 10. His offense came back to life, however, this week, scoring 14 in a 30 point win over Pepperdine, and 12 in a 23 point win over Portland. Beyond his scoring, Lewis contributed three assists against the Waves, and three steals against the Pilots. The most explosive scoring option off the bench for the Gaels, Lewis broke out of his slump first by becoming more comfortable scoring off the dribble on the inside. From there, he has become more open on the perimeter, and has been able to knock down a few threes. With 150 points scored now this season, Lewis has scored the 14th most points of any freshman to play under Coach Bennett, and we are only about half way through the season.
Lewis and the Gaels will have a quick turnaround from Saturday night's game, as they'll be back in action on Tuesday night at home, hosting LMU at 8 PM.
