SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — As just announced by the Australian Basketball Federation, a pair of Gaels, Kyle Bowen and Harry Wessels, have been selected to represent their country for the Boomers in the Trans Tasman Series. The Trans Tasman Series will feature a three game series against the Boomers' rivals, New Zealand, from May 7 - 11. Bowen and Wessels will be coached by a fellow Gaels in the form of Adam Caporn, a 2003 Saint Mary's graduate and a member of Coach Bennett's staff from 2010-14, who was appointed the Boomers Head Coach a little over a month ago.
A 2023 graduate of Saint Mary's, Kyle Bowen enjoyed a four year career with the Gaels that saw him appear in 124 games, starting 75. Known for his tenacious defense and relentless effort on the glass, Bowen was a fan favorite in Moraga, leading them to their first of now three straight WCC Regular Season Titles in 2023, and to the first two of their current four straight NCAA Tournament berths. A two time Academic All-WCC selection, Bowen has continued his basketball career in his native country, spending the last two seasons with Melbourne United, playing along fellow Saint Mary's alums Matthew Dellavedova and Tanner Krebs. Playing his same brand of gritty basketball amongst the pro ranks of Australia, Bowen has helped lead Melbourne United to a Regular Season Title in 2024 and to two NBL Championship games. This is his second call up to the National Team, after representing the Boomers in the 2025 FIBA Asia Qualifying this past November in games against Thailand and Korea, averaging 4 points, 5 rebounds and three assists per game.
Harry Wessels is coming off of his best season as a Gael, serving as the top post option off the bench. Now with three years under his belt as a Gaels, Wessels has appeared in 97 games and has been a force underneath the basket, shooting 58.4% from the field for his career. He averaged 5 points and 3 rebounds per game off the bench this season, both career highs, and also gained much fanfare for his excellent free throw shooting, knocking down shots from the charity stripe at a team-high 82.4% clip. The biggest moment of his Gael career came this season when playing host to Gonzaga. With starting center Mitchell Saxen fouling out with 4:22 play, Wessels was given the assignment on Zags leading scorer Graham Ike, but limited to just two points over the final four and change, and blocked his game tying layup attempt with 30 seconds remaining. This is Wessels' second call up to the Boomers, after appearing in one game for them in the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers against New Zealand.
Other players on this upcoming Boomers roster include familiar faces Keli Leaupepe (LMU Alum) and Austin Rapp (Former Portland Pilot). The three games of the Trans Tasman Series will take place on Wednesday, May 7 in Adelaide, Friday, May 9 in Sunshine Coast, and Sunday May 11 in Hamilton, New Zealand.
