SAN BRUNO, Calif. — Saint Mary's picked up their first conference sweep of the season, downing Oregon State in all three of their contests this past weekend in Corvallis to make back within a game of first place in the WCC. Many players had standout performances over the weekend, but the two stars who shined the brightest were sophomore pitcher Mia Nishikawa and junior center fielder Tori Cercantes. As such these two were named the WCC Pitcher and Player of the Week respectively, making them the second pair of Gaels to sweep the awards this year, with the first being Odhi Vasquez and Mia Zabat on February 24. This is Nishikawa's second time winning this award this season, and her fourth overall. It is the first time this year and second time overall that Cervantes has earned this honor.
Mia Nishikawa pitched the Gaels to two of their three victories this weekend. She got the ball on Saturday in the opener against Oregon State, the same time in which she picked up her first collegiate win a year ago, and, after falling behind 4-0 (three unearned runs), hung up five consecutive zeroes, stranding the tying run at second on three separate occasions to pick up her 20th career win. She followed that up with five innings in the finale, surrendered just three runs and walking none, leading the Gaels to the sweep. It was Nishikawa's third multi-win week of the year, as she now has tied Odhi Vasquez for most wins on this team with nine.
Tori Cervantes sparked the Gaesl to 18 runs in a three game sweep of Oregon State on the road. She hit the go-ahead two-run home run against the Beavs in the opener, drove in the tying and go-ahead runs in game two, and drove in the go-ahead run in game three. Three of her four hits were of the extra base variety, including two home runs to bring her season total to a career best six.
Mia and Tori will look to lead the Gaels to another sweep this weekend, playing host to San Diego.
