SUNNYVALE, Calif. — The Saint Mary's men's cross country team competed at the Bronco Invitational on Saturday morning, finishing 20th out of 22 teams. As has become a trend at the annual meet, the Gaels turned in a number of personal-best performances throughout the 8K race.
The Gaels' top five finishers ran in a tight pack, with just under 6 seconds separating the group. Senior Diego Urdiales led the way for Saint Mary's, clocking a personal-best time of 25:31.1. Freshman Noah Barthel followed closely behind, recording a personal record of his own at 25:31.2. Fellow freshman Dylan Mehnert made his collegiate debut and crossed the finish line in 25:32.4. Sophomores Luke Davis (25:34.8) and Jacob Schuetze (25:35.9) rounded out the Gaels' top five, both setting personal bests of their own.
The personal records continued throughout the lineup, with Nick Shoemaker (25:38.8), Matteo Byrd (25:46.6), and Christopher Chavez (25:54.6) all recording personal-best times under the 26-minute mark. Luis Muradas followed with a personal record of 26:07.7, while junior track and field standout Spencer Wirshing competed in his first collegiate 8K, crossing the finish line in 26:18.2. Moss Michelsen (26:34.1), Zack Springer (27:00.9), Connor McGhee (27:02.9), Quinn Davis (27:23.3), and Emmanuel Moes (27:23.9) also recorded personal bests to cap off a strong day of individual performances for the Gaels.
Also competing at the Bronco Invitational was Divan Du Plooy, who finished seventh overall in a field of 212 runners with a time of 23:46.0 while competing unattached.
Saint Mary's will look to carry this success as it prepares for the West Coast Conference Championships taking place on Friday, October 30 at Mission Bay in San Diego.
