SAN BRUNO, Calif. — Saint Mary's men's water polo's freshman attacker Leo Hachem has been named the West Coast Conference Newcomer of the Week, becoming the first player in program history to earn WCC weekly recognition during the Gaels' inaugural season. Continuing his strong offensive play this season, Hachem led the Gaels over the weekend, totaling 10 goals across three matches at the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament.
In Saint Mary's 12-10 victory over Bucknell on Friday, Hachem scored four goals while adding three drawn exclusions and a steal. He followed that performance with a five-goal outing against the top ranked Division III program in the country, Pomona-Pitzer, as the Gaels battled through overtime and sudden death before narrowly falling 14-13. Hachem rounded out the weekend against No. 18 Harvard on Sunday morning with a goal, two assists, and a drawn exclusion.
Hachem has been a consistent contributor to the Gaels' offense throughout their inaugural season, leading the team with 46 goals. He currently sits tied for ninth in the WCC in goals scored.
The Gaels will continue WCC play this week, as they first travel to Santa Clara on Friday, October 30 at 2:30 p.m. before facing UC Davis on Sunday, November 1 at 1:00 p.m.
